Hi my darling angel pies! Guess what?? For Valentine’s day, I baked you all these adorable conversation heart cookies — so bring a tall glass of milk and lets indulge in lots and lots of SUGAR before they’re all gone! The first time I attempted to make these cookies, it was a couple years back and I was including it as one component of a birthday/valentine’s day package I was putting together for my honey… and that was also when I swore that never in my life would I ever attempt to decorate a sugar cookie again solely because of the major disaster that they turned out to be — I’m talking textbook pinterest fail type of disaster. But I guess never say never, right? I just couldn’t resist and had the urge to channel my inner Martha Stewart and baked them again and I’m so glad I did because they turned out super cute.
The recipe I used for the sugar cookies can be found here . For the royal icing I used this recipe here and then just separated the one batch into four equal parts adding a few drops of food coloring to each bowl. Allow the cookies to cool before icing and once you finish icing the cookies, allow it to completely dry (I let mine dry overnight) before writing on them.
Some helpful tips that I wish I would’ve thought of before I started decorating:
–add water little by little when making the royal icing. my lines didn’t come out as crisp as I had hoped because the icing was too watery/runny — even after I added extra powdered sugar to try and balance it out
–outline all the cookies first, giving the outline some time to set and then “flood” or fill them in
–there are several different mediums you can use to actually write your little love notes on the cookies, but I found that using the “easy writer” food decorators (pictured above) was the easiest because you have the most control with it
Most importantly though, have fun with it! Hope your weekend is beautiful and filled with love! Xo
